POLICE shot a wanted criminal after they saw him take out a pistol when the officers tried to search him.
David Joseph, from Bipi Island, Manus, was shot in the leg.
National Capital District police on a routine patrol at around 8am in Gerehu last Friday saw him acting suspiciously in front of a shop at the Gerehu Shopping Centre.
NCD metropolitan commander Supt Joseph Tondop said police suspected that Joseph and his gang were in the process of committing a major robbery when
police appeared on the scene.
Tondop said the suspect was a known criminal wanted for questioning for various crimes.
He said police retrieved the weapon and the suspect was taken to the nearby St John Hospital for treatment.
He said once the suspect had recovered, formal charges would be laid against him.
Meanwhile, staff of a construction company were held up by armed criminals at the Gerehu roundabout and robbed last Friday.
Police said three men armed with two home-made guns and a pistol held up the employees of Belfast Construction Ltd between 4pm and 5pm and fled with K10,500 plus mobile phones.
