Police shoot villager

 A MAN was shot dead by police at Yawasoro, near Wewak, East Sepik, last weekend.

Provincial police commander Chief Supt Joe Poma said he  was Merfyn Yapre of Eritai 1 village, Lumi, West Sepik.

Poma said Yapre, 26, was shot on the thigh by police who went to the area to attend to a report of fighting and destruction of properties at 6pm  on Friday.

He said the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not known but police have started an investigation.

Poma said Yapre was rushed to the Wewak General Hospital but died.

“I want to assure you, the relatives, that normal police investigation will be conducted and we will keep you informed on the progress of the investigation,” he told relatives of the deceased.

“I am happy with your behaviour which showed that you are law abiding and civilised people and urge you to come forward with information should you have any, and assist the officer in charge of Criminal Investigation Division.”
