A MAN believed to be part of a gang, was wounded by police during a car chase on Independence Drive in Lae last Saturday.

Police said that was the only major incident during the weekend.

Police alleged the man from Western Highlands was part of a gang armed with two homemade guns and a pistol that held up a Morobean man and stole his vehicle, a white double-cab utility.

“They stole the vehicle at Papuan Compound and tried to escape but police providing security for the show gave chase and wounded a suspect,” Lae police operations commander Insp Fred Kaiwa said.

The incident happened between 10am-11am.

Kaiwa said another suspect had been apprehended while a third fled with the pistol into a nearby settlement. “The pair had previous criminal records and are being questioned before charges can be laid,” he said.
