Police station ‘powered’ up

GEREHU Police Station in the National Capital District yesterday received two new desktop computers and a printer courtesy of PNG Power Ltd (PPL).

The state-owned power utility also installed security lighting outside the police station and new switches and cables to restore power within the building.

PPL regional operations manager Watson Naso said as a resident of Gerehu he had noticed the police station in darkness at night and had discussed it with the commander. 

Naso said he was told the station lacked funds to provide security lighting and he therefore approached the PPL management to assist the police. 

“All materials and labour for the installation of flood lights outside the police station and the upgrade of lighting in the station as well as the computers and the printer was all covered by PNG Power,” he said

He added that the total cost of repairs and installation of the new lights plus the donation of the office equipment was K20,000.

Naso urged other state-owned entities and business houses to take heed of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill’s call to help state service providers such as police and hospitals.

He also said there would be a general clean up and painting of the police station by PPL employees living in Gerehu.

“As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations PNG Power would like to give back to the community and will also assist the Gerehu St John’s Hospital and Port Moresby General Hospital,” Naso said.
