POLICE in Morobe have taken down an illegal roadblock at a village in Morobe put up by villagers after a fight, police say.
Provincial police commander Superintendent Alex N’Drasal said the incident took place at Gabensis village in Huon Gulf’s Wampar local level government area.
A man was injured in a fight on Monday which he said was a result of drunkenness.
“It started after a man from Sepik married to a woman from Gabensis village got into an argument with four youths from the village who were drunk on Sunday night,” he said.
“The Sepik man mobilised his friends in Lae city, went to the village and started a fight with the youths.”
One of villagers tried to grab a gun from their attackers and was shot.
The villagers after realising this put up the roadblock.
Police talked to the villagers to calm things down.
The villagers agreed to meet the cost of the windshield of a police vehicle damaged during the fight.
Officers from the rural patrol unit are monitoring the situation there. N’Drasal urged both groups to maintain law and order.
