Police will support the Electoral Commission’s decision to hold the recount of the Chimbu Regional seat in Goroka, says Commissioner Gari Baki.
He said that he had reconsidered his earlier decision and now supported the recount in Goroka.
This was based on the court’s decision and also due to the short period of time remaining.
Baki said that his earlier statement to have the recount in Kundiawa was due to security reasons.
“Police will support the recount in Goroka,” he said.
“Three mobile units and a senior officer from police headquarters will also be sent in to beef up security.”
Based on security assessment and advice from police, the Electoral Commission rescinded its earlier decision to do the recount in Lae.
It moved the venue to Goroka.
Electoral Commissioner Patilas Gamato said that they would be seeking an extension of time for the recounting.
“The initial date for the return of the recount results to the National Court for further hearing or verification and declaration is this Friday, Feb 8, 2019, as ordered by the court on Nov 27, 2018,” he said.
“Due to the prolonged delay in the conduct of the recount, the time period given by the National Court on Nov 27, 2018, will lapse on Friday this week.
“PNGEC lawyers have already filed an application seeking extension of time, in light of the current situation and circumstances.”
Gamato said counting will be held in Goroka over a 50-day period.
“My deputy electoral commissioner, Simon Sinai and other officers are already on the ground,” he said.
