THE Police Internal Affairs Directorate has sent a team to Kimbe to investigate an assault on two Air Niugini staff by some personnel recently.

New Guinea Islands police chief Assistant Commissioner Anton Billie told The National that the investigators arrived last week and that disciplinary action would depend on the findings.

Ten policemen are believed to have been involved in the incident at Kimbe airport on June 30.

They were heading for Port Moresby to assist with security duties for the Pacific Games.

When they were told that their tickets had been cancelled by the police headquarters, they allegedly went into the airline’s office and assaulted the two employees.

Billie said the problem arose from the selection process.

He said the West New Britain police commander had selected the officers to be sent to Port Moresby but the acting commander chose others instead.
