POLICE are investigating the death of Harlequins flyhalf Ishmael Indepine and expect to charge a suspect soon, says NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou.
N’Dranou said they had interviewed a female suspect after Indepine’s death on Monday.
“The charge we are looking at is wilful murder according to the report stated,” N’Dranou said.
“The suspect has been taken in for questioning and as per the report she claims she defended herself but that would be determined when enough evidence is collected.
“The charge will depend on facts and evidence provided from witnesses which we are working on,” he said.
“If evidence supports her self-defence claim, then the charge will be reduced to manslaughter.”
N’dranou said the alleged cause of death was a loss of blood from wounds caused by a kitchen knife but that was yet to be confirmed by the medical report.
According to N’Dranou, Indepine and the suspect had an argument on Sunday night.
The suspect claimed that Indepine was under the influence of alcohol and the argument escalated into a fight.
N’dranou called on the families of both sides to cooperate with police.
Meanwhile, Indepine’s club released a brief statement on social media expressing their condolences for the loss of the 25-year old.
“The executive, coaching staff and players of the Harlequins club extend their deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Ishmael “Indy” Indepine.
“We celebrate his life and are privileged and grateful for having been a part of it. We will miss you dear brother.”
