POLICE will investigate the escape of 12 suspects from the Madang police station cell on Sunday morning.
Provincial police commander Chief Insp Sylvester Kalaut said the 12 escaped because of poor management.
He said among those in the cells was a man arrested over the recent killing of a journalism student.
Kalaut said he had travelled to Lae last week to arrest the man only to see him escape from police custody.
Kalaut said his men were to blame.
A youth from a settlement in Madang had warned police officers that some men in the cells were planning to saw the iron bars for their escape. But the officers ignored the warning.
Kalaut said the 12 men were allowed to occupy the corridor instead of being locked away in the main cell.
“They can’t expect me to check the cell every time and tell them to do little things down there when I have bigger issues to deal with like working on their accommodation,” Kalaut said.
Kalaut appealed to the public, especially relatives at the escapees, to assist in re-arresting the 12 men.
