POLICE in Central have confirmed receiving reports of illegal practice and undue influence in a local level government area in the province.

A letter from provincial police commander Heni Vagi to the Electoral Commissioner dated July 7 said several candidates contesting the Rigo Coast LLG presidential seat had formally lodged complaints that certain candidates had been bribing polling officials.

Chief Insp Vagi’s letter said the criminal investigation team from Central would investigate.

He said the complainants, including the people, had asked to stop polling and change the election officials involved amid the allegations that had surfaced.

Vagi said in the letter the alleged bribery took place at Kemabolo village, where the polling officials were seen receiving a substantial amount of money, which saw them getting drunk on the night of July 6.

He said police had taken in one official and questioned him in regard to that allegation.

A complainant, Ralema Gamu, has called on the Electoral Commission to stop the election and replace polling officials.
