POLICE in Port Moresby have a designated team prepared to deal with athletes who breach PNG laws during the Pacific Games.

National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Andy Bawa said in the event of an athlete or official breaking the law, the team was in place to address such matters. “We have a team set up to deal with any matters of criminal or summary nature that may be committed during their stay,” he said. “We have a team that will attend to that. Any offence committed in this country will be dealt with.”

Bawa said the necessary inductions had been done.

“I am sure the Games Organising Committee would make known prior to the athletes coming into our country the laws and regulations governing our country and advise athletes on the repercussions if someone is found to be on the other side of the law,” Bawa said.

NCD-Central Assistant Police Commissioner Jerry Frank said offenders would be dealt with “diplomatically”.  But just like anyone else breaking the law, due processes would have to be followed.

Frank said visiting athletes were well aware of what to do before they arrived in the country.
