Police visibility helping keep petty crimes down
POLICE have noticed a drop in the number of petty crimes this year in Hohola, Port Moresby, because of more police visibility.
Hohola police station commander Snr Inspector Ben Kua said they used to receive at least five complaints a week. It’s now at the most two cases a month.
“There has been a huge drop in complaints of mobile phones thefts, billum-snatching and knife threats,” he said.
Officers at the station are conducting foot patrols to ensure the bus stops, markets and shopping areas are safe. It started this year as part of an awareness programme under the Action Plan 2019.
Officers also conduct awareness in the settlements and schools on drug abuse, gender-based violence, cult activities and production of homebrew.
He however warned members of the public to continue to be alert to thieves.
Up to six officers normally walk around Hohola monitoring the spots where youths normally congregate to attack pedestrians and shoppers.
