Police want hospital to charge alcohol-related patients K300

SOUTH Fly police commander Chief Inspector Brian Kombe says police will be severe on law breakers, particularly boozers, this weekend.
So much so that Kombe has spoken to hospital staff on Daru Island and Balimo to charge people K300 who turned up with alcohol-related problems.
“Even though they have rights for seeking medical help, we have to do this so that the hefty fee would discourage them from taking liquor, especially homebrew, which is easily produced on the island,” he said.
“Drinking and partying should not be in the minds of the people at this time. This is not a time for that, it is time to go to church and reflect on why Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross,” he said.
Kombe said with liquor banned, homebrewers and consumers, if caught, would be dealt with severely.
Meanwhile, National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou is urging Port Moresby residents to celebrate Easter responsibly.
He said officers would be patrolling streets to monitor and maintain control of activities to enable people to move around freely and celebrate responsibly.
Acting Secretary for the Department of Personnel Management Taies Sansan wants the public service to adhere to the scheduled public holidays for the weekend starting tomorrow.
Sansan said today would be a normal working day.
“Agency heads can use their discretion to allow staff to knock off early (today) for the long Easter weekend,” she said.
“All public servants would be expected to resume normal duties at 7.45am on Tuesday, April 23.”
Morobe started their Easter operations last week. The rural patrol unit is monitoring the main highways into Lae city. They are also closely monitoring boat stops.
Provincial police commander Superintendent Alex N’Drasal said: “Several people in Kabwum district were arrested and charged last week relating to a murder case there.”
He said police in Bulolo were called to assist those in Menyamya to arrest a man alleged to have killed his wife last week.
“The killer does not want people in the village to go and witness what he is doing or the police to go there.”
