POLICE in New Ireland are warning people responsible for the deaths of two men last weekend to surrender before they are arrested.
A one-week police operation to hunt them down began on Monday.
The two were killed at the Taskul government station in Kavieng, according to provincial police commander Chief Inspector Felix Nebanat.
He said between 40 and 50 people were involved. Police received a report of the deaths of a 15-year-old and a 19-year-old a few hours after the attack at the government station on Sunday and immediately began their investigation.
Police believe that it was an act of retaliation over two recent deaths at Kulpetau village involving a group of men who attacked the Taskul station.
Chief Inspector Nebanat reassured the people that police were attending to the matter and would go to Taskul.
“We do not have manpower in Taskul, so we will be there to assist people restore normalcy and protect government facilities to ensure basic services continue to be accessed by the people” he said.
Meanwhile in Mussau which needs police attention, Nebanat urged the provincial and the district administrations to help people restore law and order.
