POLICE in Kavieng are investigating the death of a 28-year-old man they believe is a result of drinking homebrew.
New Guinea Islands assistant police commissioner Anthon Billie said the man from New Hanover Island in New Ireland, died from head and neck injuries on June 12 at Metemana settlement in Kavieng.
“He returned home around 9-10pm and slept on the table in a sitting position with arms and legs folded and fell down,” Billie said.
He said relatives rushed him to the hospital while he was unconscious but he died later that night.
He said the incident was reported to the Kavieng police who are investigating whether the injuries were caused by others or self-inflicted.
Billie has urged people in the region, which is known for homebrew production and consumption, to learn from the incident.
“People are playing with their lives. You must be careful what you consume,” he said.
