Police warn officers not to give uniforms to civilians

EAST Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli has warned officers not to give their uniforms to civilians as this was an offence.
He issued the warning after a probationary constable (PC) attached to the Wewak Police Station, was suspended on Friday for giving a police uniform to a civilian.
Supt Beli said the probationary constable took two civilians with him on an unauthorised operation to Kairiru Island outside of Wewak last Tuesday.
“The constable gave a civilian his field gear to wear when they went to Kairiru on Tuesday,” he said.
“They conducted a raid, removed marijuana and made arrests on the island.
“Early Wednesday morning, they brought the civilians to have them locked up at Wewak station when it came to our attention that the one wearing the field gear was not a policeman.
“The civilian was arrested and charged for impersonating a police officer.”
Supt Beli said the probationary constable was arrested and charged with issuing police uniforms.
He was also suspended for 21 days, effective Friday.
“While we appreciate the constable for trying to do police work, he should advise his command and make proper arrangements instead of going out to the island alone and with civilians,” Supt Beli said.
Meanwhile, he said a senior constable was also arrested and charged recently for assaulting another senior officer at Tangori Police Station in Yangoru-Saussia.
Supt Beli said the senior constable was currently out on K500 police bail.

  • This call must be dealt with seriously. There is a welfare officer in Goroka Welfare office who is using police issued uniform to enforce child protection laws mainly through bribery with the arrangement from a known police officer there. I was one of the victims of his double life, being a welfare officer in a Police issued uniforms and also boasting about his power under the police uniform to perform any police uniform as well. Oh and by the way, he was under the influence of alcohol in the police station and seen drinking SP green can right in front of the police officer, whom later I found out that those two were involved in some mission to go after children with troubled parents involved in marriage problems for cash to the parent that pays a good sum of money.
