EASTERN Highlands police are still trying to establish who fired the shot that killed a 30-year-old man in Kainantu during the student unrests last month.
Provincial police commander Supt Alex N’Drasal confirmed on Friday that the police investigation was still going on and they have yet to establish who fired the shot that killed Philip Olivi.
“I have reports of people sighting three armed men among the crowd. The question of who fired the shot is yet to be established and police are still investigating,” N’Drasal said.
He said after the completion of the investigation they would identify and prosecute the person who fired the shot.
“Police are not saying the shot was fired by the police, shop owners, tribal enemies or whoever. Only the investigation will reveal the fact surrounding the shooting of the young man,” Supt N’Drasal said.
He also refuted an earlier statement that the shots were from a shop owner.
The deceased was inside the Singaut Christian Bookshop when he was hit by the stray bullet and was rushed to Goroka hospital but died an hour later.
