Police: Youths threatening leaders

Main Stories

YOUTHS who accused and tortured a woman of causing the death of a three-year-old girl by sorcery are threatening community leaders not to reveal their identities, Omili police station commander Elias Labi says.
He said the youths from Kamkumung’s Peter Block had threatened to attack the family members of leaders who snitched on them to the police.
The youths had on Jan 11 tortured the woman but she was rescued by police following a posting on the torture on Facebook.
“We have yet to make any arrest but we are closing in on our investigations.
“It is only a matter of time before we arrest the culprits,” Labi said.
Jacklyn Gabby from Kainantu was tortured by the youths who accused her of practising sanguma (sorcery), causing the death of Frieda Daniel.
Two houses belonging to Gabby and her relative from Eastern Highlands were also torched by the youths. Labi had appealed to community leaders and witnesses to help police identify the assailants.
He also lamented that community leaders seemed to have been intimidated by the threats.

  • These people who make allegation of sorcery, can they have other means within the Law to bring sorcery suspects to face the justice system than attacking, torturing and killing suspects?? This is total madness, simple as this “you and I will be dead and gone when sorcery existed”. Stop this nonsense!!

  • Just give them some kind of penalty to such people like that. Taking their lives instead
