Policeman arrested over death of man in East Sepik

A POLICEMAN based in Port Moresby who was deployed to East Sepik to provide security has been arrested over the death of a man.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said the policeman was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when he shot the man from Turubu who was an employee of the Turubu Oil Palm project.
He said the policeman was being questioned over the matter.
He was deployed to East Sepik with others to provide security at the Turubu logging camp and the plywood factory at Kanduwanum.
He said information he received indicated that the police officer was walking behind the man when he allegedly shot him.
Beli immediately sent policemen to the scene to assess the situation and arrest the suspect.
Beli said the relatives of the man later burnt down a water tank, a house and a few oil palm trees.
They stopped when police arrived at the scene.
