Policeman killed at Waigani

AN off-duty police officer returning from buying breakfast died after he was attacked by a man armed with a knife at Waigani in Port Moresby on Friday.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Benjamin Turi said the officer was attached with the Highway Patrol in Central.
Turi said the officer was returning from buying breakfast at a shop in Waigani when the man, who he had a long-running dispute with, hit him six times with the bush knife.
He said the officer managed to get into a taxi to go to hospital. But he died on the way.
The officer was originally from Western Highlands.
He was married and had three children. They live at the Bagita Police Barracks in Waigani. Police believe that the suspect was from Wabag. He is still on the run.
Turi urged him to surrender himself to police.
Meanwhile, Turi said other incidents occurred during the weekend.

  • A police reserve officer attached with the Gordon police station fell from a police vehicle when returning from Isiu village on the Hiritano highway. He was run over by a bus.
  • A female doctor was allegedly raped in her home at Four-Mile in the early hours of Friday by a group of men. Turi condemned their action as animalistic. He said doctors were there to assist us when we seek medical treatment.
  • There was an armed robbery at Hohola The shop owner struggled with three men and shot one dead.
