Policeman pleads guilty to reckless driving

A POLICEMAN charged with driving without due care and attention pleaded guilty in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.
Ben Isakuma, 58, from Magitu viilage in Hagen, Western Highlands, told Magistrate Ore Ore that he was a policeman with 42 years of service in the force and he was guilty of the offense.
“I am clear about the charge, the police statement is true,” Isakuma said.
Magistrate Ore confirmed the plea and adjourned the matter to next Monday, for ruling on submissions.
He said police would ask the court to penalise Isakuma and the maximum fine was K2,500.
Police alleged that on May 25, at about 9.15am, Isakuma drove a grey Toyota Vista sedan along Wards Road, Hohola, in National Capital District.
Isakuma allegedly turned right at Islander – Holiday Inn traffic lights to Wards Road.
He saw vehicles in front had slowed down and applied the brake but it failed.
Police alleged that Isakuma’s vehicle bumped into a taxi which surged forward and hit the rear of a Hyundai station wagon.
All three parties reported to Boroko police station.
Police revealed after investigations that Isakuma allegedly drove an unregistered vehicle.
He was arrested and charged with driving without due care and attention and was detained in Boroko police station cells.
