A GROUP of policemen in Lae escaped with minor injuries after a truck ploughed into their vehicle last Saturday.
The incident happened at the Milfordhaven and Bumbu Road Junction.
Lae Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr said the driver of a truck lost control and crashed into a police sector response unit vehicle.
“He (driver) overtook the vehicle in front of him without realising that the police unit was travelling on the stretch of road heading up towards Bumbu Police Barracks junction,” Wagambie claimed.
“As the truck overtook, it went straight into the oncoming police unit. The police driver was caught by surprise as the truck had suddenly pulled into his lane. The police driver tried to avoid the truck.”
Wagambie said the police vehicle was doing drop offs and pick ups for the day/night shifts.
“Fortunately, the police personnel in the vehicle did not receive any life-threatening injuries,” Wagambie said.
Wagambie said the traffic police attended to the accident scene and arrested and charged the truck driver for driving under the influence of alcohol and for negligent driving.
The driver was allowed bail and will appear in court according to the Met Supt.
