A POLICEMAN from Gerehu station and a taxi driver died in a car accident outside Port Moresby Nature Park on Monday night, police say.
Gerehu station commander Hanson Tokally told The National that Constable Ruben Leo, from Kumindi, Western Highlands, and the taxi diver were both drunk when their car crashed into the watering truck at high speed.
Tokally said they were speeding when they bumped into the back of a water cart belonging to the PNG Gardener.
“The driver did not see the PNG Gardener watering truck and drove into the back of the truck,” he said.
It is understood that the taxi driver wore the police officer’s jacket when they left the drinking venue and drove to Rainbow where the incident happened.
Tokally said the driver suffered extensive head injuries and died at the scene while the officer died at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
The dead bodies were taken to the funeral home at Erima.
National Capital District Commission Met Supt Perou N’dranou could not be reached for comment.
