Polye: Poor economy affecting students
The National, Monday February 15th, 2016
OPPOSITION leader Don Polye said economy mismanagement has a spill-over effect on tertiary students nationwide who have missed out on scholarships and spaces.
Polye said Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and his government’s move to cut the quota for tertiary student sponsorships and intakes spoke volumes about economic situation.
“The Government has increased the grade point average (GPA) for students because they could not afford the scholarships under AES and HECAS due to the economic problems,” he said.
“We have seen that most candidates who have met the eligibility requirement for university entry have missed out in shock.”
Polye said the Opposition was cautioning the Government to weather the economic disasters from the beginning but the warnings were ignored out of their arrogance.
“Now that what we projected has come to a reality, the prime minister and his economic ministers are camouflaging with sweet talk only to inflict on our people,” he said.
