PORT Moresby Australian Football League (POMAFL) received new sporting gear from Papua New Guinea AFL Development to support its competition this season.
PNGAFL Development director Ekonia Peni handed over the equipment and apparel to POMAFL president Douglas Lai and vice-president Mathew Pulah at the Colts Oval on Friday.
Peni said the support was made possible through donations from AFL Queensland.
“It is part of a big programme that we have to support all the leagues in PNG and we’re starting with Port Moresby,” he said.
“We thank AFL clubs in Queensland for donating all these gear to support leagues in PNG.”
The equipment include jerseys, socks, balls, pumps and goal-post pads. “I’m very encouraged by the support,” Lai said.
“We have expanded our competition to include women this year, and the donations will be appreciated by all the teams.
“It’s quite expensive to afford jerseys and balls, so we’re thankful for the kind gesture.
Lai said POMAFL would for the first time have goal-post pads to raise the standard of the league.
“It’s a blessing to receive this because we also having children participating in the competition,” he said.
“The pads will protect players from hurting themselves when running into the posts.
