PORT Moresby has urged fellow softball associations in other province to begin their pre-season tournaments.
Executive member Consie Bais made the call following the success of the Port Moresby Men’s Softball Association’s fast-pitch tournament held a fortnight ago.
“As the leading softball association in Papua New Guinea, we encourage outside centres to take ownership and start their pre-seasons,” he said.
With interest for softball blooming in the diamonds, the association plans to run its programmes next month.
“Our plan is to run programmes for juniors to Under-23s from June to August,” Bais said.
He said they would introduce a new tournament this weekend.
Bais said the format would help develop the skills and knowledge of players.
“As we all know softball, is a thinking game,” he said.
“Such format helps players to be smart in thinking and strategies in a short period of time.”
The tournament will be played for five Sundays from this weekend to June 5.
The teams confirmed to participate are United, Pawa Rangers, Hornets, Grizzlies, Antelopes, Eagles, Cats, South Side Jets, Saints, Defence and Kalibobo Red Sox.
Teams have been divided into two pools for round-robin games.
“At the end of each Sunday, teams will be awarded points according to their placing from 1 to 12.”
