Pom chicken supply sinks

National, Normal

ONE week’s supply of poultry products bound for Port Moresby supermarket shelves were lost at sea
off Salamaua, Morobe province, at the weekend.
Lae Port sources said yesterday that one of the country’s biggest poultry producer, Lae-based Zenag Chicken, lost thousands of kina worth of goods after 11 of its 12 shipping containers sank when the mv Lihir Express ran aground on Saturday.
Nine of the sunken containers were stacked with frozen whole chicken and chicken pieces, while the other two were loaded with eggs.
The only container salvaged was stocked with frozen chicken.
Although the chicken producer was not talking yesterday, some Port Moresby shops which sell these poultry products may experience temporary shortfalls in eggs and chicken in the next couple of days.
It is understood that this is the second time in 12 months that a similar incident has occurred at sea – the previous one between Milne Bay and Central waters in which thousands of kina worth of stock was lost.
