ONE of the premier matches in the Port Moresby cricket competition was abandoned during the elimination rounds on Sunday due to poor lighting.
The match was between BNG Poreporena and SNS United held at the Amini Park.
Poreporena took the crease first with an early setback when their top order collapsed until captain John Ovia anchored a solid partnership with John Boge Reva.
Ovia, however, was finally bowled out on 23 by United’s Nigel Boge and left young Reva to take the lead until he found himself caught in a rut to be stumped out by Arua Dikana.
Poreporena found themselves all out for 106 after 39.5 overs with United’s Adolf Lohia, Erue Taunao and Boge leading the wicket take with two apiece.
United, on the other hand, began their batting in top form with Tanti Heni and Dikana getting straight on with the runs.
Heni’s wicket was the first to fall through an LBW at 17 while Dikana top-scored with 21 before being run out.
United’s middle order was a little shaky until Tau Sere brought some hope with an easy 14 until caught by Norman Vanua through some brilliant bowling by Rarua Agalu.
With 20 overs remaining, United left the task to coach-player, Kohu Dai and George Boge, to capture the last 29 runs for a win.
However, the overcast late in the afternoon did not help visibility forcing the match to be called off with United on 5-78.
The Port Moresby Cricket Association’s fixtures and ground committee member, Charles Amini, said it was unfortunate to see the game end so prematurely.
However, he said a decision would be handed down on the outcome of the match.
He added that because the finals date was set for the end of this month, it was unlikely to have a rematch.
