PORT Moresby AFL (POMAFL) has commended the West Eagles and Kokofa-Cats for Saturday’s grand final despite a drop in participation this season due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
POMAFL president Douglas Lai commended the Eagles on their 44-33 win with the grand final ending the shortened season on a high note.
“Thank you to all the coaches and managers for ensuring that your clubs survived the year amid the pandemic,” he said.
“We’ve survived the pandemic to complete our season with the grand final.
“West have been a dominant club and have showed it, their commitment and hard work has resulted in another premiership.
“To Kokofa-Cats, I can’t take away anything from you, you’ve been very good and you’ve been giving a good challenge to the defending champions all year.
“From the officials’ side, we watched a brilliant and fair display of football, so we’d like to commend everyone for a great match.”
Lai also acknowledged the support of Moni Plus and former PNG mosquito Walter Yangomina for sponsoring the cash prizes and medals for the grand finalists.
The Papua New Guinea AFL Commission, through member Professor Kenneth Sumbuk, congratulated POMAFL for a successful season.
He said AFL in PNG continued to thrive despite the pandemic because of the support from families and fans.
