Pomat to future speakers of parliament: Remain neutral

SPEAKER Job Pomat says any MP elected to take up the post to preside over debates in the House must be neutral.
He told Parliament last Friday that following the events that unfolded in Parliament almost a year ago, he felt that the person sitting in the speaker’s chair must remain neutral.
“Since being appointed to be the chair of this House, I have seen and observed that any member of parliament once appointed to be speaker must remain neutral and not be seen as being one-sided,” he said.
“He must perform his roles and responsibility as chair and is neutral in his decisions.
“We know exactly what happened from last year to this year.”
Pomat said after 40 years of independence, everyone knew how Parliament should be run.
“We in this House talk about our laws and our job is to make changes to the laws to help run the country.”
Pomat also said he would make an announcement on his position as the speaker “in the next couple of days.”
