Poor call to sell water to Australia

Letters, Normal

I WANT to inform all Southern Highlanders (especially those from the eastern end) and our fellow countrymen and women to oppose the proposed piping of our water to Australia.
Australia has benefited a lot from Papua New Guinea compared to any other country.
History shows that most of our natural resources have gone to Australia and the fact remains that no matter how much aid they provide, they received 10 times more from us.
I have no grudge against Australia or Australians, they are a great nation with wonderful people and we appreciate all the assistance they have provided and are continuing to provide but a line has to be drawn somewhere.
Water is definitely a non-negotiable issue.
The water cycle has a delicate balance, from evaporation to rain to the replenishment of our streams and rivers, then back to evaporation and the whole water cycle starts again.
This delicate water cycle cannot and should not be disturbed nor tampered with.
I will be buying a full page advertorial on the matter in due course (including providing scientific data) outlining why we should not agree to this ridiculous proposal to pipe our water to Australia.
We are sick and tired of having a few ignorant politicians and people in power making stupid and dumb decisions for the majority without our knowledge and consent.
Papua New Guineans who are trying to assist with the piping of our water are no better than prostitutes.
Apart from financial gain, there is no logical and justifiable rationale for the proposal to pipe water overseas.
It appears no one has been reading the newspapers.
NARI has issued an El Nino-drought warning within the next three years.
This phenomenon appears every 10-15 years.
We need every drop of water we have.
Did those who agreed to the proposal consult established government institutions like NARI for advice and direction instead of blindly making decisions that could possibly destroy our natural habitat and ultimately the life of millions of rural Papua New Guineans?
These people live in towns and cities and could not care less.
Do whatever you want but don’t sell my water.
