Poor teachers still suffering

Letters

WHILE everyone is making holiday plans and trips with families and relatives for the coming festive seasons, for teachers it is likely to be just a dream.
Teachers in South-Fly District, in Western, are still waiting for their leave entitlement funds.
According to the notice given to teachers on Nov 30 from the provincial education division, leave fares for 2017 is not ready to be paid out yet.
It is sent to the province by the national Government through the Finance and Treasury Department.
To the teachers in the districts, it means that this will be another year in which they will again be treated as prisoners.
Apart from 2017 leave entitlement claims, many teachers still have leave entitlements owing from past years.
The Western Province Education Division, under the administration of the principal education adviser, has to explain why some teachers have been paid leave entitlements for 2012 to 2016 while others have not.
It should also explaining why K40,000 in leave entitlement was given to a teacher who has not been in the classroom teaching but instead has been selling betel nut at the market for almost a year.
There is no reason why teachers have been denied their leave entitlements for consecutive years by the provincial education division.
In addition, there hasn’t been any visits from senior standard officers to secondary and high schools in the district for the past few years.
As a result, many teachers are unregistered, with some have been acting in the same position for years.
