RETURNING Popondetta rugby league president Matthew Kano has called on all clubs in the competition to begin their preparations for the new season.
After a general meeting on Jan 25 involving club officials, the former Northern Zone representative was re-elected to the position for the second year running.
The other members are Brian Tamanabae (vice -president), Buase Hugo (secretary) and Joanne Kano (treasurer).
Kano appealed to the six clubs in the competition to pay their affiliation fee of K200 each and a K20 registration for every player by Feb 15 when the executives hold their second meeting.
Kano also gave a brief outline of what the season had in store.
“Our pre-season starts on Feb 28 and ends mid-March.
“After that, we go straight into our season proper which is scheduled to end on Sept 12,” Kano said.
The six clubs confirmed for the season are last year’s premiers Popondetta Eruptions, Hawks, Opal Tigers, Vudal Brahman, Medics and Panthers.
“We will be introducing a schoolboys competition for the under 16s and 18s while in the clubs there will be three grades – A, B and C – playing,” Kano added.
She also said there are plans to change the name of the competition to Popondetta Fuzzy Wuzzy Rugby League competition before regular season started.
Kano acknowledged the ongoing support of Papindo for their continuous support.
“We are grateful to Papindo who have previously provided sponsorship that has enabled us to successfully run our games.
“They have supplied the uniforms for the teams and have given things like water and ice on a weekly basis which we are extremely thankful for.
“We hope Papindo will continue their commitment to Popondetta Rugby League this year so we can carry on growing as a competition,” Kano said.
