THE 8.5km section of the Poreporena Freeway in Port Moresby was opened to traffic by contractor China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (Chec) yesterday.
Chec said in a statement that the whole 8.5km of the freeway was cut into different sections and were attended to section by section.
The Poreporena Freeway rehabilitation project was funded by China Aid.
“The last 1.5km starts from SP Roundabout and ends at Jmart Roundabout and opened yesterday,” Chec said.
“This now marks the completion of the entire 8.5km road.
“Both carriages are open to traffic for people to use.”
Chec said ancillary facilities such as traffic signs, street lighting replacements and others were progressing well.
All the roadworks will be completed by the end of this month.
“As part of the donation from the People’s Republic of China to PNG, reconstruction of the Poreporena Freeway will serve the 2018 Asia Apec Summit and the general public as a whole going into the future,” Chec said.
“We urge everyone to cherish the project.”
It includes rehabilitation of the Poreporena Freeway funded by the China Aid at a cost of K70million, and Independence Boulevard from Waigani Drive to Parliament at a cost of K40million.
Both road projects are gifts from China to PNG.
Chec said the freeway and Independence Boulevard were built to a completely new standard. The new Boulevard, according to reports, will be closed off on days of National importance.
