THE Poreporena Freeway is open to traffic again.
Last Thursday, NCD Governor Powes Parkop opened a temporary bridge built at the Hohola section of the freeway that was washed away during heavy rain in Port Moresby recently.
Parkop drove a vehicle across the bridge and expressed delight at the completion of the temporary bridge.
Parkop thanked Dekenai Construction Company and Curtain Bros Ltd for not seeking an upfront payment before starting work.
“We bypass all formalities and I am sure the cost of this is well over a million and whatever they (Dekenai Construction Ltd and Curtain Bros Ltd) ask, we will pay them,” he said.
Parkop said it was temporary bridge to ease some of the traffic problems faced in the capital city while the real work was done to replace the broken culvert.
“This road was built by the national government back in the 1990s and with the continuous rain, the culvert burst.
“It will take time to replace that with a strong one that can last for the next 40 to 50 years,” Parkop said.
He said vehicles with loads over 40 tonne would not be allowed to use the road.
“It is only meant for light vehicles. I kindly ask all the drivers to drive with extra care.”
