COURT officials and police officers have disposed of materials kept as court exhibits over the past 10 years.
They include more than 300 home-made guns, pistols, live ammunition, wire catapults, knives, cartons of marijuana plants, pornographic materials, gas tanks and containers for producing homebrew and related accessories.
National Court judge acting Justice John Kaumi, Magistrate Pious Tapil, police Inspector Hove Genderiso and Sergeant Brian Panda led the disposal exercise on Saturday.
Magistrate Tapil said homebrew, drugs and homemade guns were a concern in communities because illegal activities relating to them occurred on a daily basis.
“In Indonesia, the death penalty is the only answer for those found guilty by the courts with drugs,” he said.
“Similarly, firearms are also manufactured with an intention to kill. Thus, the Government needs to review the law and increase penalties for cases involving firearms, drugs and homebrew.”
The exhibits collected from court houses and the police station were transported on the mv Labi to open sea where they were dumped.
The drugs and homebrew accessories were later burnt at a secluded area.
Magistrate Tapil said the court house used to keep the exhibits would be renovated for the hearing of cases.
Genderiso said homebrew and drugs cases came before the court on a daily basis.
