THE Tent City back-to-school soccer tournament ended on high note with visitors Poro beating local team Sekadu United 1-0 in the final in Lae, Morobe, on Saturday.
The NS Builders-sponsored tournament attracted 32 teams from across the city with the aim of promoting good sportsmanship and campaigning against school fights.
The final went down to the wire as Poro and Sekadu, both fielding Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) and amateur players, battled for major honours.
Both sides played out a scoreless first half before they stepped up after the break in a bid to end the stalemate, but Poro had the last laugh after netting the winner.
Tournament sponsor Robin Somboi said: “we can play soccer but the sport needs your commitment.
“The tournament is aimed at helping promote your talents, it is not always about winning trophies.
“If you are here to play for trophies then you are not a good player.
“Focus on contributing to a brighter future for football, be a good player and ambassador of the country.”
He said he would support ward five councillor Jacob Maragau in staging a bigger tournament.
“Our academic level in the city has dropped and many students didn’t make it to higher institutions, with school fights being a contributing factor apart from the Covid-19 pandemic,” Somboi said.
Former Lae City coach Peter Gunemba, who saw the final, told Poro and Sekadu that there were National Soccer League scouts in attendance.
