PORT Moresby AFL (POMAFL) will launch its 2021 season in two weeks’ time with the competition to host exhibition matches at Keapara village in Rigo, Central. POMAFL president Douglas Lai told The National that the launch followed continued discussions with the sport’s national governing body, Papua New Guinea AFL Commission, in organising the season. “Saturday’s discussions with the commission has led to confirmation of the event and plans are already underway,” he said. “The season launch is scheduled for June 19 at Keapara village and the POMAFL pre-season will start the following weekend on June 26. “The pre-season may run for a weekend with games to be played on Saturday and Sunday, and the finals will be played in the afternoon. “POMAFL and all the club executives will meet this week to further discuss the dates that we’ve scheduled for June.  “We are also awaiting the PNG Sports Foundation (PNGSF) to give the permission to start training at the Colts Oval.” POMAFL and several other competitions from different sports are awaiting approval to resume training and competition. PNGSF has reminded competitions that some sports may have more restrictions due to the potential for increased risk of transmission. The restrictions are likely to include enclosed/gated venues only where protocols can be effectively managed. There will be no spectators allowed, but the directive will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
