Port Moresby and Chinese help

Letters

IT does not make any sense to me when I hear or read complaints about the millions of kina used by the National Capital District Commission and the national Government to develop our capital city.
As proud citizens of this country, we should know that a nation must have a capital city.
And when it does, the capital city does not stay small but through development it flourishes and grows in every aspect of infrastructure, foreign investments and diplomatic ties, etc. It is like that all over the world.
Compared to cities in other Third World countries, Port Moresby city will be ranked very low.
However, we have seen major infrastructure developments since 2012 and that is continuing simply because of the vision of the current government with NCD Governor Powes Parkop.
The governor has great vision to really transform Port Moresby and this has been happening in many ways since the day he was first elected.
Foreign investment is now increasing despite the forex issues.
This is simply because of the good leadership and the strong public-private partnership between the State and the developers.
China is pouring in its support and has been financing key impact projects in the city and that has really changed the image of Port Moresby.
China, unlike any other donor country, has been helping Port Moresby city and the country with major infrastructural development.
China has been doing this to help Pacific Islands countries, including PNG, and build long-term relationship.
China has been investing in many countries around the world, especially with infrastructural developments.
It is now doing the same in PNG.
Papua New Guinea remains an independent country and its sovereignty is intact.
Creating better relationship with other countries and potential investors should remain part of PNG’s sovereignty.
On same note, our capital city of Port Moresby must continue to grow into the future and become like the Chinese city of Shenzhen one day.
Chinese people are here to stay and they will build this city because they see great opportunities in PNG while Westerners see PNG as a nation with law and order issues and bad for investment.
China’s growing influence in the Pacific has been seen by Western countries as a threat.
