Positive side to asylum-seekers deal

THE assimilation of the refugees could have a positive angle.

I  know the popular sentiment is outrage over the deal struck with Australia. But if we look at the other side of the coin, there could be benefits to us.

For starters, these people coming in are not necessarily the poorest in their countries.

The fee to get  on a boat run by people smugglers is pretty steep, so these people would have to have a substantial amount of money.

This would suggest a middle-class background, which in turn would mean that the breadwinners of these families would have had a decent job.

They could have been bankers, engineers, accountants, professors and the like.

We have an opportunity to put their skills to use by employing them to help build our country.

Our government could scrutinise those coming in and assess the potential for development they may have to offer to this nation.

I am not for the refugees settling here and there is a lot the Government has to answer for over that.

All I am saying is that this deal may not be all doom and gloom for us.
