Five villages in Kaupena, Southern Highlands, will now have electricity for the first time despite being next to the Pauanda Power Station.
The Ambupugul to Komol Rural Electrification Project  was launched last Saturday by PNG Power managing-director Carolyn Blacklock and Imbonggu MP and Higher Education Minister Pila Niningi.
Blacklock said that the project was not just to connect electricity but to build a long-term relationship with the people.
“If you want electricity you have to take ownership of the project,” she said.
“Respect the facilities, respect the workmen who will come to roll out the project and look after the power lines.”
Niningi spoke against unnecessary compensation demands.
“Either you want electricity or you want compensation: It’s for you to decide,” he said.
“If you want power, don’t ask for compensation for power posts that will be built on your land.”
The project is part of PNG Power’s long-term plan for rural electrification and will be rolled out in Ambupul, Kabiapul, Wangiapul, Komoli and Amboianda in the Imbonggu district.
