LOAD shedding of electricity supplies started in Port Moresby yesterday and will continue for the next two weeks.
PNG Power acting chief executive officer Chris Bais said the load shedding was due to routine maintenance work being carried out at the privately-owned Hanjung power station at Kanudi.
“The Moitaka power station is also experiencing a shortfall in generating capacity due to two of its machines going offline.
“PNG Power personnel are currently working on restoring the machines,” Bais said in a statement yesterday.
“We are experiencing low water at the intake at the Rouna hydro power stations due to little or no rain at all at the Sirinumu dam and in time that might also affect normal power supply in Port Moresby.”
Bais said a load shedding schedule would be published in newspapers.
He added that business houses and individuals with standby generators were asked to utilise them during this time.
Emergency load shedding was carried out in Lae, Madang and parts of the Highlands region last weekend.
Lae experienced prolonged outages due to a fault on a transmission line between the city and Ramu.
The outage affected Baiune in the Bulolo district.
PNG Power personnel rectified the fault and restored normal power supply in Lae yesterday morning and were still working on restoring supply to Bauine.
