Power project to increase customers in Mendi
PNG Power will soon add 1000-plus customers to its customer base of 2800 in Mendi, Southern Highlands.
The company said this would be possible after the completion of a 80km. 22kV power project in the Nipa district.
The power project will connect customers from Nipa into the Mendi distribution network.
The project is funded by the Government.
Work on the project is being carried out by an independent contractor.
Once construction is complete, PPL will inspect and certify that the work meets standard requirements.
“This is a very important project funded by the national government which will boost our customer base as well as our revenue generation in Mendi,” PNG Power (PPL) said in a statement.
“The generation capacity in Mendi is 1.2 megawatts fed from the Ramu grid and has a customer demand of 700 kilowatts.
When Nipa is connected, our generation capacity can cater for Nipa as well as lalibu.
“It is an exciting time for the province to see its outer districts get connected to the electricity grid and boost the districts business activities and other key government services.”
Major customers that will benefit from the PNG Power grid will be the new Nipa General Hospital which will be opened next month, the William Powi Centre and the new government workers’ homes.
