THE Southern Highlands election steering committee and Governor William Powi has commended the people of Nipa-Kutubu for a successful council election.

Powi, accompanied by election manager David Wakias and provincial administrator Ungia Kembo, travelled to Nipa station to thank the people for their conduct during the election.

Powi said the people respected the counting and accepted the results.

He said there was no election-related trouble as in the past council elections.

“This clearly indicates that people understand and respect the election process and completed all the declarations, including ward councillors and presidents,” he said.

The last council president to be declared for Nipa Basin local level government was John Titus.

Titus polled 12,019 votes on Monday to unseat two-term council president David Navur, who polled 10,444 votes. David Tolis came third with 9300 votes.

Volunteer election observer Robin Pip commended all the candidates and their supporters for a trouble-free election.

“I want to also commend those who volunteered their time to observe the counting and ensure there is no foul play. All the parties including losing candidates and their supporters,” Pip said.
