PNG Power Limited says a technology with quick response, good performance, and high reliability is effective in managing power quality.
PNG Power chief executive officer Chris Bais said the Static Var Generator (SVG/STATCOM) was very efficient in saving energy and maintaining grid stability.
He said PPL was the first electricity utility in the Pacific region to adopt it.
At the power generation stations, STATCOM manages and minimises the reactive power component supplied by the generators which prevent temperature rise and enable maximum power output.
On the transmission and distribution system, it improves voltage stability, power quality and maintains voltage level between the generating source and customer.
Bais said STATCOM had no problem from its installation in 2011 to January this year when a fault with its electronics forced PPL to shut it down.
He said voltage stability in Lae was a challenge when the STATCOM went offline and caused unstable power supply to customers.
But now with the spare parts installed last month, there are no disturbances on the network.
PNG Power Limited installed three MVar STATCOM machines at Taraka in Lae (2011), Meiro in Madang (2014), and Boroko in Port Moresby (2014).
