PPL installs solar panels in district
The National, Monday February 16th, 2015
THE people of Tol in Pomio, East New Britain, now have electricity after PNG Power Limited installed solar panel equipment in homes.
The Pomio district solar panels project was a partnership between PNG Power, Gazelle Restoration Authority and the district administration.
PNG Power chief executive officer John Tangit said they installed “state-of-the-art” solar systems on eight houses and distributed 160 mobile solar kits between the district’s four local level governments.
“They installed the solar panels on three teachers quarters, a school administration complex, a hospital, a doctor’s house and two Pomio administration houses. The electricity will assist government officers to serve the people,” he said.
“The areas of installation are in correlation to the accessibility of people to government services, which are health, education and administration.
“Because Tol is outside the PPL grid, solar power was chosen to harness sunlight to generate electricity for the people.”
He said the solar power facility would generate about 1.8kilowatts of power.
