PRE-independence celebrations in NCD schools started on a high note when Korobosea Boroko East International School hosted its first show yesterday.
Kindergarten and pre-school children sang independence songs, performed drama plays based on significant historical events and staged traditional dances from all corners of Papua New Guinea.
Kindergarten and preparatory children started the show with a display and parading of baskets from around the country. They then impressed their audiences with songs and dances from Morobe, West Sepik, Central, Bougainville, East New Britain and Eastern Highlands.
Grade 2 pupils took centre stage and put on drama plays depicting significant historical events.
Children from the 2N class kicked off the plays with their performance on the early explorers. This was followed by 2L performing the arrival of the early missionaries; 2W staging the arrival of foreigners; 2M depicting World War II; and 2DM reenacting the very first flag-raising ceremony on Independence Hill.
Grade 2 teacher Vitalis Waiat said: “The children were taught throughout the term the significance of independence in PNG and they knew what they were performing.”
The Grade 1 cluster performance of traditional dances from the four regions of PNG stole the show and ended the day well.
Students interviewed said they enjoyed dressing in their traditional costumes.
