FOUR female PNG Correctional Services recruits have been terminated for becoming pregnant during their six-month basic training at the Bomana Training College in Port Moresby, Commissioner Stephen Pokanis says.
“These females were also involved in posting nude photos and sending them to serving warders through social media (Whatsapp and Facebook) while undergoing training,” Pokanis said.
“Eight male recruits were also terminated for smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol at the college.”
Pokanis said the female recruits were pregnant before entering the college.
“The medical team didn’t pick up any signs of pregnancy during the initial medical test,” he said.
“But when undergoing second medical checkup while in the college, they were detected to be pregnant.
“The physical training instructors also noticed that the females were struggling in their physical training exercises and made recommendation for them to take a second medical checkup.
“They should have been honest about their pregnancy conditions and not taken up their offer to enter the college.
“They should have waited and delivered outside.
“And after delivering, they can reapply to come to the college.”
Pokanis said with the 12 terminated in the current intake, it left 143 recruits to pass out tomorrow.
“We wanted all of them to pass out with flying colours and to strengthen our existing workforce in prisons throughout the country.
“Unfortunately, they have failed themselves and the PNG Correctional Services as a whole.”
