A MAN posing as a doctor entered a hospital’s labour ward and tried to examine the women inside – but they beat him up when they discovered his fake identity.
A source at the Modilon Hospital said the man entered through the back door of the labour ward wearing a mask and had gloves on.
He tried to lure a pregnant woman who was experiencing labour pains into the ward’s shower.
“He came in at 11pm and told the woman to go into the ward’s shower because he wanted to check her,” the source said.
But the woman realised that he was reeking of alcohol and told him to wait. She immediately alerted the nurse on duty.
The man quickly left the ward and went into the next one where he demanded from the women their medical records so that he could look at their weights.
Serah Kenny, one of the women at the ward, said they quickly spread the word that there was a “fake” doctor trying to examine them.
“We mobilised – the pregnant women, sick ones and some nurses – we surrounded the man and beat him up,” Kenny said. She said the hospital guards had to drag the women away.
A police officer at Jomba police station said the man was badly injured when he was brought in and locked up in the cell.
Madang provincial police commander Chief Superintendent Sylvester Kalaut condemned what the man did.
