A SCHOOL board chairman in Mt Hagen says the recent increase in electricity rates will affect most schools.

Chairman of the Tarangau Primary School Douglas Ivarato said the 5.9% price hike announced by PNG Power Ltd would affect their budget.

Ivarato said the school was already paying more than K24,000 annually to PNG Power.

“This is not right because what PNG Power has done will affect schools which operate on funds given to them by the Government,” he said.

Ivarato said the Government should sack the board and management of PNG Power because the effect of their bad decisions and poor leadership were being passed on to the people.

“I do not see any reasons why it is doing this to rob us,” he said.

He said PNG Power should not blame the devaluation of the kina as an excuse to increase rates.
